Week 5 Event – Taronga Zoo
Never been to one of Australia’s highest rated zoos? Here’s your chance to join Unimates in our Week 5 event for a day at the Taronga Zoo!
Taronga Zoo is home to over 2900 exotic and native species including rare Western Lowland Gorillas, Sumatran Tigers, Snow-leopards and of course Australian animals such as kangaroos, koalas and wombats!
Highlights of the zoo include:
- The Seal Show
Catch these adorable stars flaunt their natural abilities including fish catching, diving and other seal-ful surprises!
- The famous free flight bird show
Mesmerize yourself in a flight of colour and a symphony of noise as exotic birds dive and swoop above you. Let them amaze you with their impressive skill and agility that you would want to come back for more.
- The Asian Elephants
Visit Taronga Zoo’s famous Asian elephant herd and if you are lucky, you may even catch them playing football!
These are just a select few of the amazing animal encounters you will have on that day. Unimates will be boarding the Captain Cooks Ferry to get to the zoo. This ticket will also give you access to Watson Bay, where you can try their popular and (very) yummy fish-and-chips on the way back!

Get ready for one of the best events in USYD!
The Mooncake Festival is back. But this year it’s bigger, better and much more bombastically fun.
Jointly organized by SUAMS, Singapore Student Society, TCA, UniBodhi, Unimates and VSA, the 2011 Mooncake Festival is a cultural and social eye-opener and it’s an event that you have to attend.
Always wanted to know what is a ‘mooncake’ and the story behind the festival? Join us and have some delicious finger food, mooncakes and drinks while you watch our cultural performance displaying the rich traditions and history of the festival.
Away from home and unable to celebrate the festival with your family? Don’t feel left out. Join us and mingle around with old and new friends while celebrating this well-loved tradition.
Always wanted to run around with a Chinese paper lantern? Always wanted to make a paper lantern? We have that too! Join our Chinese paper lantern making competition. You can compete either individually or in groups. Our elected judges will choose the best designed lanterns. So let your imagination go wild and demonstrate your arts and crafts skills. Don’t worry, we also have a riddle-solving competition for the less art-inclined (ahem. Kidding, kidding). There are fantastic prizes to be won!
The best part of the event? It’s outdoors, so you get to enjoy this cheerful atmosphere in the warm, spring evening while being entertained by our MCs. The perfect antidote to university stress.

Gold Coast Trip
It is official; we’re going to the Gold Coast! Mark it down on your calendars: from the 26th of September to the28th, we’ll be bathing ourselves in sun, surf and an all-round glorious time.
Originally our plan had been to spend all three days at some world class theme parks, but some members have suggested that we provide a more varied alternative itinerary. Therefore, we have conjured up a second, concurrent itinerary for those of you who would like to see what else the Gold Coast has to offer.
Spend three days at three of Australia’s best theme parks which will get you to visit roller coasters, sea land dolphin shows and monstrous water slides that wind and dip and stretch into eternity. Your VIP ticket actually lasts a lot longer than 3 days…well into2012, so if you really love it, you can go back there next time, free of charge!
Sea World: Dolphins fighting polar bears. Penguins fighting seals. Sharks fighting alligators! A day of nature at its fiercest!* (Animals may not be fighting each other, or in the same enclosure)
Warner Brothers Movie World: Like roller coasters? Like Batman? Like Bugs Bunny? Like sitting on a roller coaster alongside Batman and Bugs Bunny? This is your theme park!
Wet n’ Wild: MONSTROUS water-slides that dip, curve, stretch up to the heavens and plunge down into cool, dark waters.
The alternative itinerary is more structured and lets you see a little bit of Queensland, outside of the theme parks. Learn to surf on Surfer’s Paradise’s golden sands. Spend an evening playing with koalas, kangaroos and crocodiles and experience a taste of Aboriginal culture with buffet. And also, a day trip to Brisbane!!
· Note that if you want to, you can still go to Brisbane with the Brisbane people on day two of your trip.
The price will be around $400 and we will be collecting deposits of $200 this Wednesday!!
1. Wednesday 24 August, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm: Usual Coffee and Cakes Location
